Doesn’t everyone want absolute freedom? Well at least I do. My Dutch phrase always is vrijheid blijheid (happy with freedom). And for me freedom is that I’m able to go wherever I want, whenever I want.
I am surprised to see all of the tourists who come to Bali hire a car with driver to go places. It’s not the price that’s an issue, because a car/driver is 450.000 rupee (€28) for a day. It’s the experience is what these guys are missing.
Because what are the highlights, the things worth remembering? Not the major sights! Yes the rice terraces are pretty and the temple is old. But the fact that these sights are placed remotely on the island makes it an adventure getting there.
Start feeling alive by driving on mountain roads with sharp curves, pass unknown villages, meeting locals trying to help, see unexpected places and crossing roads which isn’t more than a few stones between grass.
Got excited but afraid of getting lost? Don’t be! For €12 you get a local SIM card with 3G for your smartphone and you have Google Maps everywhere you go. You really can’t get lost like this!
Afraid of the traffic? Okay since riding a motorcycle back home I do have an advantage here, but unless you’re an unexperienced (car) driver back home you should be just fine here.
Since I’m constantly on the go these 2 weeks I left my luggage in my first/last hotel and just brought the bare necessities. Stuffed these in the buddy seat of the motorbike and there are no worries about storing luggage first.
Time to come to Bali, get out of the touristy South and into the real paradise.
Note: bare necessities also means no laptop, so no photos to upload. Sorry!
