Looking for a bit of adventure? Ride a mountain bike on Death Road.
What is Death Road?
The Camino de la Muerte is an old road outside of La Paz which is famous for the significant number of fatal accidents that occurred on the narrow passage. A new route opened in 2006 for regular traffic, and nowadays the old route is being used by adrenaline junkies on mountain bikes.
The dangers of Death Road are from the lack of barriers and a drop of hundreds of metres, that in combination with a narrow path, sharp twists and turns and waterfalls making the road a slippery and treacherous endeavour.
Of course this is just the thing on my list of to do’s! With a tour I joined four other solo travellers to get down the 36 km trail. The first part is easy on the tarmac, after that it’s only gravel and bumpy riding. The entire route is downhill, which resulted in me mostly pulling the brakes on the mountain bike, finishing with sore hands and arms.
There are many agencies offering the mountain bike tour to Death Road. I simply booked the tour in La Paz for 400 bolivianos. Definitely don’t book online, as you’ll pay a much higher premium.
