Kyoto exceeded all my expectations; walking through the older districts it feels like I’m back in the Shogun era. The lovely temples, the Japanese girls in yukata and the small streets give it all an authentic feel.
Throughout the whole city you’ll find many temples with perfectly maintained gardens. All these temples will set you back about 500¥ (€3,50) each, so at the end of the day it does add up.
Kyoto is surprisingly small and easy to navigate through. Beside the subway, the bus system is straightforward as well. For 500¥ you get a day pass and with the provided map it’s a breeze to get anywhere you want.
You can spend a whole day, or even two in Higashiyama. This is Japan how it used to be.
A 20 minute busride from Kyoto Station is Arashiyama; most famous for its Bamboo Grove but take your time to stroll through the many gardens here.
The Fushimi Inari shrine has a pathway of 4 kilometers long and is lined with thousands of red torii.
