A visit to Peru is not complete without making a stop in Cusco. The capital of the Inka’s is the starting point to visit the many scenic places in the area. Of course the famous Machu Picchu, but don’t miss the many archeological sites, the sacred valley, humantay lake and rainbow mountain.
Or get off the beaten path by renting a motorcycle to tour the mountain pass to Quillabamba.
Festival
It’s June, and the local festival Inti Raymi is on June 24th. Not only on this day but the whole month is one big celebration, especially around the Plaza Mayor. People gather in traditional attire, doing various dances. It’s quite the spectacle to see.
Walking tour
To get around in Cusco, I followed the Lonely Planet walking tour, which is always a great starting point to view the main sights but also those quaint streets.
