Since my flight is from Varadero, I decided to spend my last two days here. Varadero is a place for the all-inclusive packages with huge resorts. I stayed at a casa particulares in town close to the beach. I soon found out there isn’t much to do here. I hoped/expected the beach would be the nicest in Cuba, but I liked Playa Ancon so much better. As a backpacker I guess I also felt a bit out of place here. So what did I do? I used the hop-on-hop-off bus for 5 CUC that drives along the entire peninsula and back, seeing all the resorts. Also spend some time at the beach, rented a bed and umbrella for 5 CUC and just relax. Sidenote: relaxing is not an easy thing for me. To be honest, if you don’t fly out from Varadero I wouldn’t recommend coming here.
Where I stayed
Casa Mary y Angel is a top pick from the Lonely Planet. It’s more expensive than other places in Cuba, but Varadero is more expensive overall. The breakfast is very good and filling, I especially like the French toast. They also have their own wifi hotspot (bonus) and the rooms are cleaned daily.
Casa Mary y Angel, Calle 43 – Av 1, www.casamaryyangel.com/varadero, info@casamaryyangel.com, 45-61-23-83. Price 40 CUC (double), 5 CUC for breakfast.
