Cienfuegos is a popular stop between Vinales and Trinidad. Some people stop here because else the journey is too long, others because they’re interested in French architecture and for me it’s a completely different reason.
To be honest I think the city Cienfuegos isn’t worh th stop, you’ve seen it al within two hours. I stayed the night because I really wanted to visit El Nicho waterfall. For only 15 CUC my casa particulares arranged a taxi collectivo to pick me up the next day at 9 AM. Later I found out that for only 5 CUC more the taxi collectivo can drop you of in Trinidad after the visit to El Nicho. This would be the better option but I already arranged my casas and transport.
El Nicho
After almost a two hour drive the taxi dropped us at El Nicho where he gave us two hours to explore. The entrance fee is 10 CUC and along the trail are various waterfalls. The main one at the end ‘Poceta de Cristal’ is definitely the highlight with a blue-greenish pool in the midst of the jungle.
Where I stayed
The casa particulares I stayed in Cienfuegos is Las Golondrinas, Dr. Victor. This casa is both close to the center and the Viazul bus station. On the rooftop terrace they serve breakfast (5 CUC) and dinner (10 CUC). At this place I had the best shower in Cuba (enough pressure with hot water).
Casa Las Golondrinas, Calle 39 (btwn Avs 58 & 60), drvictor61@yahoo.es, 43-51-57-88. Price: 25 CUC (double), 5 CUC for breakfast.
