After clean and punctual Japan I had to make a 180° switch to dirty and chaotic Manila. Due to bad planning I only stayed in the Philippines for 4 days and unfortunately not on one of those beautiful islands.
Nonetheless I did have some interesting and random encounters here.
Upon arrival I instantly noticed how welcoming the Filipinos are. On the airport I was greeted by the friendliest immigration officer ever; she gave me a few tips what to see instead of the usual silent or intimidating person. All the airport staff were extremely helpful. At that moment I already felt ashamed that I didn’t stay longer.
Also everyone speaks English, even though it’s not their primary language. The movies are in English without subtitles and the radio too. But among each other they speak Filipino, so I’m not sure how the English language is integrated here.
When taking the metro there is a female-only area. For safety maybe? Being in a wagon with only women does feel safe, on the other hand if that’s necessary isn’t quite reassuring.
The other means of transportation is the jeepney, similar to the Thai tuktuk. They hold a sign of their destination, you pay a few pesos and they drive off when their full. Surprisingly it works rather well.
Apparently Manila has a Mall of Asia, since I already been to the Mall of America in Minneapolis, I also had to check this one of my list. Not as impressive as I have hoped but check.
Being in a mall here can be a relief though, it’s like walking in a bubble away from everything that’s outside.
So what’s outside? Friendly strangers all the time who say Hello, people trying to sell you anything and mostly the dirty and smelly streets.
Since I’m positive that the Philippines can be so much more beautiful than I have encountered, a dreamy photo from above.
