Last November I decided to visit South Africa with my mom, well actually it was her idea. I wasn’t convinced at first, but after a few looks on Google Images I thought this country could be worth my while.
So, now here I am! From Amsterdam I had an 11 hour flight to Johannesburg. Arriving late in the evening we had to pick up our rental car; a Kia Rio!
Yup we weren’t allowed to drive a nice brand because we’re crossing borders. The Kia apparently reduces the chance of car theft. Well, I like our Kia!
This was my first time driving a right-wheel car on the left side of the road. But nothing I can’t handle of course. I have to admit that it took a bit getting used to; changing gears, mixing up blinkers with windshield wipers. Luckily a full day of driving helps adjusting quite fast.
After a good night of sleep I picked up a local SIM card with 5GB of data at the Vodacom shop at a local mall. Yup I am an internet junkie and need my fix! The SIM plus data cost me 400 ZAR (€23) which is totally worth it.
Now it was time for our first 4 hour drive to Graskop, a small town which is close to our next destination, the Panorama route. We did love the last part of the road trip; driving through the mountains and making various photo stops to check out the scenery.
