Arriving in Colombia
Cartagena is my first destination in Colombia. Most people will start their Colombia trip in Bogota, but I was in dire need of tropical temperatures, after traveling for so long at high altitudes in Peru, Bolivia and Chile.
Apparently before arrival, one needs to fill in the online immigration form. I was totally unaware of this and it didn’t seem to give me any trouble or questions at the airport immigration.
Caribbean culture
As Cartagena is situated at the Caribbean Sea, I really noticed a change in culture too. The more laid-back vibe, the music, and the colors. It was an obvious difference with the countries on the South side of the equator.
Where to stay
When visiting Cartagena for a couple of days, definitely stay in the old city or Getsemani. I stayed in the recently built modern Mood Matuna Hotel, situated just between those two areas. The place was absolutely stunning, modern, spacious and comfortable. Plus a perfect location to easily visit both areas within walking distance.
Wandering through the Old City and Getsemani
I spend my days in Cartagena wandering the old city. The place isn’t big at all and can easily be explored in a day or two. You might want to stay a bit longer, because the vibe is excellent, the colorful houses are absolutely photogenic, and the food extremely delicious.
On every street corner there are stalls selling fruit, coconut water or lemonade. And what absolutely can’t be missed are the Palenquera ladies in their colorful dresses and a basket of fruit on top of their heads. These ladies are more than willing to pose for a photo, but for a tip of course!
In Getsemani the walls are covered with astonishing murals. And if you’re into art, pass by the multiple outdoor galleries who sell their vivid paintings.
