When visiting Sri Lanka you’ll probably also spend some time on the beach. Luckily there are many pretty beaches to choose from. During my visit I visited a couple coastal areas and sum them up for you.

Tangalle Beach
A pretty beach that isn’t too touristy, but with the rough waves and rocks it’s not good for swimming at all. Since I also want to be in the water, this place wasn’t for me. There also wasn’t much to do downtown.

Mirissa
This was my absolute favorite! The beach was pretty and even had a small peninsula you could walk up to in low tide. The bay is perfect for swimming and it had enough restaurants and attractions to keep you occupied for a few days.
I surely recommend to go sailing with Sri Sail in Mirissa. This Belgian company has a huge Catamaran but also smaller sailing boats, perfect for a day out.

Hikkaduwa
The most touristic beach I stayed at in Sri Lanka. I liked that they had plenty of nice restaurants and many diving schools that love to take you in the deep ocean. Unfortunately the concrete buildings are too close to the shoreline and the place loses its tropical vibe.

Bentota
Bentota also isn’t very touristic and is lovely too see. A few resorts are right at the beach but I prefer the more modest guesthouses to stay at. The beach is picture-perfect but the atmosphere felt a bit cold here probably due to the huge resorts.

Negombo
Negombo is a great place to start and has a huge beach. Although Negombo has all you need to start your adventure in Sri Lanka, you won’t find any tropical palm trees here, nonetheless it’s a fine place to get your feet in the ocean.

Winner: Definitely Mirissa, go to this place when visiting Sri Lanka to spend your lazy days on the coast. Also a picture of me enjoying the wind in the sails 🙂
