The hill country is the most beautiful part of Sri Lanka. Stunning landscapes and lovely hikes can be found in this area; so definitely a part of this country that you shouldn’t skip in your itinerary. So what are the places that you should see?
Nuwara Eliya
Here I’m mostly referring to the road from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. A perfect road through the beautiful landscape, the closer you come to Nuwara Eliya the area gets filled with tea plantations. Everywhere it’s green and plenty of panoramic views.
The town Nuwara Eliya isn’t that great, but a great start to go to the next place.
Horton Plains
Go to this National Park in the early morning, after 10 am the mists sets in and you’ll be missing out on the stunning scenery. Here you do a 3 hour hike through the plains and the World’s End, an 870 meter drop. The best part here is that you don’t need a guide or a tour and can explore this National Park on your own.
Ella
One of the most relaxing towns in Sri Lanka and I definitely recommend to stay here at least 2 full days. From this place there is plenty to see and hike. Walk along the tracks towards Nine Arches Bridge, or see a waterfall. Hike Adam’s Peak or the more challenging Ella’s Rock. Also plenty of nice restaurants in this town to eat and the traveler vibe is just great.
Uda Walawe
Just below the hill country is the National Park Uda Walawe. To see the wildlife in this park you must join a jeep safari. During a 3 hour safari you’ll see plenty of buffalo’s, elephants, crocodiles and birds. It sure is great to see these magnificent creatures up close in their natural habitat.
