Driving in Sri Lanka, for some people only the thought sends shivers down their spine. Me on the other hand love exploring a country this way, it gives you complete freedom and the ability to stop anywhere.
I rented an automatic Honda motorbike in Negombo for my 16 day stay. The price is around $10 (1300 rupees) per day. For the first time during my travels I actually got the international driving license at home which you need. The rental company takes a copy of this and uses it to arrange a Sri Lankan driving permit. This way you’re insured in case something happens and luckily I had this covered.
On my first day driving I actually had an accident with another motorcycle. Luckily I was fine and just had a huge bruise and a nasty looking scratch wound. The motorbike needed repairing though which was done the same afternoon. When an incident like this happens, within no time plenty of locals go out of their way to help you. Checking if you are okay and they called the rental company.
The rest of my vacation I had a wonderful time on wheels. It sure can be a rewarding experience to drive in Sri Lanka. And when you’re having doubts? If I can, why can’t you?
