The less popular but still a pretty place in the North of Vietnam is Ninh Binh. From this uninteresting city you can take daytrips to various scenic places. To split the costs of a private driver, I hooked up with a friendly guy from Malaysia to do a boat ride through the Trang An Grottoes and take a hike in the Cuc Phuong National Park.
What I loved about Trang An is that it’s similar to Tam Coc, but only the Vietnamese tourists come here. Apparently being a Caucasian female traveler made me an attraction too; the people on all the boats kept looking and waving at me.
See everyone smiling at my camera? I wouldn’t get this type of photo in a “regular” situation.
