Driving back home from work I called my Dad to see if he had any plans for the weekend. His suggestion was doing a road trip along the Rhine and Moselle river in Germany. So a few days later a small backpack was packed and we started our mini vacation, we even took along my niece.
So what did we do during our 2 day trip in Germany?
Konigswinter
From my hometown Zoetermeer we covered a three hour ride to our first destination; Konigswinter. From the valley you can take the cog railway to the top and have a magnificent view of the Rhine river and its surroundings. We walked our way down through the forest and made a stop at Drachenburg castle, where at the moment a wedding ceremony was taking place.
Koblenz
After a delicious German lunch we took my Fiat Punto to Koblenz. As the weather was perfect and sunny, everyone was outside on the terrace or walking along the many shops the town has to offer. We enjoyed walking through the streets of Koblenz and made a stop at the point where the Rhine and Moselle rivers connect. From here is a cable cart which brings you to the Ehrenbreitstein fortress and another stunning view.
Since we also took my niece along, we did some shopping as well. Luckily for her the stores stayed open till 10 PM.
Dieblich
I booked an hotel for the night in Dieblich, which is 10 km Southwest of Koblenz. A small village really, but we had a fantastic dinner at Hotel Pistono. We sat at their cozy outside terrace until late in the evening. Altogether with great a great meal, rose wine and my favorite Heisse Liebe ice cream for dessert.
Cochem
Waking up still full from yesterday’s meal, we drove along the Moselle to Cochem; another old town with plenty of history. Although it was Sunday, this place was plenty of touristy to keep the stores open. Cochem is a really cute town and on a sunny day a stop for many motorcyclists and trike riders. And of course it houses another castle to visit.
Monschau
From Cochem it was a fairly long drive to Monschau. Since there was no highway in the area we drove through the hilly landscape of the Eifel National Park.
On arrival at Monschau we already saw our fair share of historic towns and decided just to pass through for some well-deserved ice cream.
Valkenburg
The last stop of our road trip was Valkenburg. Now the excitement started as we came across the toboggan run. Both me and my niece immediately were like “Let’s do this!” and went for two runs.
We finished the evening at the outside terrace of one of the many restaurants in Valkenburg. It was a great weekend, now time to get home.
View on top of the hill of Konigswinter, my niece and dad are looking out.
