It’s December, last week on Monday morning I checked out the flights to Malaga and found some cheap fares for the next week. I instantly decided to visit my Mom in the South of Spain.
To make the most out of my short stay, we decided to do a road trip to Madrid, including some extra stops.
Toledo
On the first day we visited Toledo; an old city along the Tajo river which used to be the old capital of Spain. Apparently it was a Spanish holiday while we were here and the streets were packed with local tourists. We spend the day walking through the quaint narrow streets and came across a beautiful view of the river. At night the same streets were decorated with Christmas lights to give us the true holiday vibe.

Madrid
After we stayed the night in Toledo it was only 70 kilometers more to Madrid where I booked another cute hotel in the city center. We parked the Seat Ibiza in the parking garage and went into town.
Madrid is similar to Paris with broad avenues, but also the same type of architecture of the buildings. We started the day by viewing the major sites; Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral and the Royal Palace. After that we just enjoyed walking around and took a stroll through the park.
On the second day we decided to be more cultural by visiting a modern art museum. We thought wrong, we both were bored out of our minds and expected something more than only some paintings on the wall. *Side note: I’m not much of a museum type anyway.

The route of Don Quichot
On the way back we made a stop at the windmills of Don Quichot in Consuegra. Although I never heard of him before, he was the main character in a famous novel who traveled around this area. But I did love the view of the windmills across the hill.
The last stop was at Las Lagunas National Park, which consists of nine different lakes. Here we took our lunch break, ate a surprisingly good pizza and checked out the views before we headed back towards Torre del Mar.
