On the first day of our city trip in Budapest, we explored Pest (on the East side of the Danube river).
Our day started with a bicycle tour with Buda Bike. They placed us in a group with a total of twelve Dutch and Flemish speaking cyclists. The Hungarian guide lived in the Netherlands for a few years and spoke Dutch perfectly.
The great thing about a bike tour is that you cover a fairly good distance in a relatively short time. We learned a bit about Hungarian history while visiting some of the popular sites such as the Parliament, Heroes Square and the Shoes Memorial. But I especially loved hearing about the lesser known places like coffee houses and playful fountains.
The tour ended around lunch time and we were starving by now. We picked a nice Italian place for some tasty pizza.
Our afternoon was filled with strolling through the quint streets in the center. And some shopping too.

Shoes Memorial; during WWII the Jews were forced to take of their shoes (where any jewelry may be hidden) before being drowned in the river.
